Creating issues from templates
Launch a new Jira issue from an existing template in five steps. The canonical create-issue flow through the Apps menu.
The canonical create flow
This is the simplest path: sign in to Jira, pick a template, fill any variables, and the issue is created.
If you have not yet built a template, start with the getting started guide and creating issue templates.
Six steps
Sign in to Jira
Open Jira and sign in. Templates are available on any Jira Cloud page once the app is installed and you have at least the Use templates permission.
Open the Apps menu
In Jira’s top navigation, find the Apps menu. It is usually on the main toolbar at the top of the page.
Pick Create issue from template
In the Apps dropdown, choose Create issue from template. A dialog opens.
The issue creation screen, where you choose a template and create the new Jira issue.
Pick a template
The dialog lists every template you have permission to use, grouped by project. Pick a template either by clicking it once and choosing Use this template, or by double-clicking.
Fill any variables
If the chosen template defines variables, a small form appears. Fill the required variables (marked with an asterisk), adjust the optional ones, and confirm.
If the template defines no variables, this step is skipped entirely and the issue is created immediately.
Done
Your new Jira issue is now in the project the template targets, with every field from the template applied. If the template defined sub-tasks, the whole tree is created in one action, with variable values propagated from parent to child.
Want to confirm before creating?
If you want the user to see and override values before the ticket is created, pick Prefill new issues instead. This opens Jira’s native create-issue dialog with the template values pre-populated as defaults. See prefilling the issue creation screen.
